How did this project come about?
The Heartland United Way has been actively working with community partners to respond and adapt to the community needs that have emerged since COVID-19 began to transform our lives in March 2020. Community response began with a meeting of community leaders on March 2020. Since that time HUW and Heartland Disaster Recovery Group staff have been supporting community information sharing and supporting direct assistance projects. Throughout the last 11 months, there has been a real challenge in communicating emerging health, safety and wellness information to all members of the community, and in languages other than English.
Heartland United Way learned about a similar communication project happening in Dakota County, NE and was able to utilize DHHS CARES funds to bring these electronic community boards to the Grand Island area.
How were they funded?
This project is funded through DHHS CARES Act Response and Recovery Funds.
Why is this a need?
There are some in our community who have limited access to the internet, social media, and other direct outreach efforts. After identifying some of these gaps in communication, this innovative project was created in order to get vital information out to the community. In conjunction with this we have a diverse community that is multi-lingual. Providing community resources and information in the primary language of our community members, will assist people in having greater access to the resources they need. The Electronic Community Boards are a great platform to provide up to date information on any COVID-19 related information, like vaccinations.
What is the impact goal?
Increase access to health, safety and wellness information to underserved populations in Grand Island and surrounding areas; including resources for assistance programs and food distributions.
